There a so many great organisations in Tauranga doing amazing things for the community. One of the highlights of my job is that I get to visit these groups and the people who give their time and energy to run them. Last week I visited the Tauranga Menz Shed, based at the Historic Village on 17th Ave.
The idea of Menz Sheds originated in Australia but has spread around the world. The Tauranga Shed has room for woodworking and carpentry, and they work on projects for other local groups and charities. It a great way for retired men to stay active and involved in the community. When I visited they were building tables and making some toys for a preschool. I understand that there are plans underway for another Menz Shed in Mount Maunganui, which I would welcome.
I also met with SILC, a local disability services provider. SILC works to give people as much independence as possible. One of their clients I met had previously been living in a rest home but, with the support of SILC and the services they provide, has been able to move out and into a supported living arrangement.
As of next week the electorate office will be moving around the corner to 35A Third Avenue. The new office is very central, easy to get to and on the footpath so that people can walk on up. I welcome your visit.
