It has been an amazing year.  Leading the National Party and representing Tauranga is my great privilege.  Getting out and about and meeting so many New Zealanders has been fantastic. I want to thank all of the businesses and organisations for opening their doors to me.

A year into Opposition we’re taking a good look at all of our plans and policies, running the ruler over what worked and what we could do better.

My three-month road trip, connecting with communities was a standout experience.  Taking part in almost 70 public meetings that were attended by around 10,000 New Zealanders was a huge undertaking.  Kiwis have been generous with their ideas and very clear about what is and isn’t working for them.

The opportunity to meet a number of world leaders and influencers including President of the Republic of Korea HE Moon Jae-In, President of the Republic of Indonesia HE Joko Widodo, former President of the USA Barack Obama, Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’, has been inspiring.

I want to win in 2020 because the Labour-led Government is making decisions that are having a real impact on New Zealanders.  It banned oil and gas exploration without consultation and without any proof it would reduce emissions.  It set expectations high for teachers when it came to pay but hasn’t managed to resolve their pay. That means strikes which disrupt families and the education of our children. It has committed billions of dollars to failing policies like fees-free tertiary education and KiwiBuild.  And I am sure they will introduce a capital gains tax.

The National Opposition has forced the Prime Minister to back down on rolling out more regional fuel taxes, developed a well-supported approach to medical marijuana and kept New Zealanders safe by forcing the Government to give up on abolishing three strikes.  We have also offered bipartisan support for climate change and child poverty.

If National earns the right to govern in 2020 we will repeal both Capital Gains Tax and the ban on oil and gas exploration.  And we will introduce no new taxes in our first term in Government.

I believe we are winning the contest of ideas, and demonstrating that National has the vision and the team to deliver a better future for everyone.

The constant support I receive from my team, party members, the Tauranga community and New Zealanders makes this all so rewarding.  Thank you for your time, ideas and ongoing support.  Together we are on track for the 2020 election.

The Tauranga office will be closed for the Christmas break from Thursday 20th December and will reopen on Monday the 14th January.

Finally, Natalie and I would like to wish you and your families a happy and safe holiday season.  We are looking forward to the warm weather and some family time, after a fast-paced and fruitful year.

Merry Christmas from my family to yours
